Getting Started

Can I Bring and Cook My Own Food?

At this time we do not allow players to use the kitchen for personal food storage or cooking.

Do I have to play a character my first event?

Nope! You can Full-Time Monster, which means you will work with Staff and Storyteam to play the ‘monsters’ or ‘bad guys’ the players will be fighting and interacting with. Full-Time Monstering does earn you XP toward a future character.

How can I help Xadune grow?

Firstly, thank you. 🙂 Xadune is a labor of love and we wouldn’t be here without our amazing players.

The biggest help anyone can offer is simply to tell your friends about us! LARPing is a niche hobby, and while many people have heard about it, few know how to get involved.

Playing the game also helps Xadune. By wearing appropriate costuming, decorating your tavern, and creating interactive stories with us, you make the dream come true. Staff can only do so much to create an immersive environment – it is maintained by the players.

You can monetarily donate to Xadune as well. These donations go straight back to you. While you get XP for donating, the money is also used to create costuming and props, pay for site, and to fund game expenses.

How Do I Get Tickets?

You can purchase event admission via the Event Admission page.

How Old Do I Have to be to Play?

The Story of Xadune touches on some heavy themes. As such, we do not allow minors. The age minimum is 17 with parental permission, 18+ without.

There is no upper age limit. Adults of all ages fit in at Xadune.

Is Food Provided at the Events?

Food is available for purchase in the Tavern all event for an additional fee.  For more information on Tavern and pricing, check out the Tavern page.

Please note that negative Tavern Tabs will not be allowed. If you do not have enough money on your Tab, you will be unable to order.

Players can keep food on site, but will not have access to the kitchen facilities.  Moreover, grills, crock pots, griddles, and the like are prohibited due to safety concerns.

In short: Food is available (and delicious).  Bringing your own snacks is encouraged, but you will not be allowed to cook on site.

Is Xadune Safe?

LARPing is just like playing a sport, and with any sport there is a chance for injury. The most common injuries are sprains, strains and twists.

We have trained staff on-site ready to handle these types of injuries. Should additional medical attention be necessary, our camp site is less than 15 miles from the nearest hospital. To ensure you receive the proper medical care, please complete the Medical Release Form.

What are the Camp Site Facilities Like?

Xadune is played at various Georgia State Park Group Camps. Site-specific can be found on the Locations page.

In general, each site has cabins with between 4 and 20 twin-sized beds.  Each ‘town’ (group of cabins) has a centralized restroom and showers.  Most sites do not have heating or air conditioning in the cabins.  Each site has a centralized Tavern (mess hall) with a large seating area and a kitchen.

What Boffer Weapons are Commonly Accepted?

Commercial boffer manufacturers provide professional-quality LARP safe weapons at a variety of prices. However, not every manufacturer maintains the safety regulations which coincide with Xadune’s protocols.

Below is a list of manufacturers that typically pass at Xadune. Please note that ALL boffers, regardless of origin, will be safety checked. Just because the boffer comes from one of the below manufacturers does not guarantee it will pass; but in the past, these manufacturers have been vetted.

Recommended Vendors

Forged Foam – Ranging from full-contact weaponry to some particularly artful pieces, Forged Foam has safety in mind in their creation. Recently, the line of more realistic weaponry has brought a new, fresh look to their inventory.

Epic Armoury – In general, these weapons have been known to pass. However, they are not stab-safe.

Nemesis Ateliers – Can be hit or miss, but in general will pass.

Calimacil – Xadune has been a LARP Partner for Calimacil for over a decade. While the majority of their weapons will pass inspection, some of their newer products have been a bit unsafe. In general, if the product has been around for a while, it will be safe; newer products or models which are replicating a weapon from popular culture tend to fail.

Not Recommended Vendors

These vendors have had safety issues in the past, or otherwise have produced weapons which would not pass at Xadune. Not all weapons from these vendors are considered unsafe; but purchase at your own risk.

Mitryl – While pretty, these weapons typically do not pass our safety checks.

Local Businesses

There are several local businesses accepting commissions in the area, and often in the Xadune community. Contact us for more details.

What is Victorian Gaslamp Fantasy?

Sometimes called an offshoot of Steampunk, Victorian Gaslamp Fantasy is a genre which reflects the Victorian Era, but with magic. Its a bit like the urban fantasy genre, if you were alive in 1890.

What this means for Xadune is, the suitings and stylings are distinctly Victorian, but the ‘impossible’ – magic, and portals, and amazing mechanical creations – is commonplace.

For outside references to Victorian Gaslamp as a genre, check out the following media:

Books

Dracula (yes, that Dracula)

Television and Movies

Carnival Row

The Nevers

Penny Dreadful

Character Creation

Can I Play a Race Not in the Rule Book?

Xadune allows you to play a ‘Planeswalker’ character – a character from another game or story of any race.  However, the character will suffer from ‘Walker Sickness’ and will start at level 1, just like everyone else. For logistical purposes, the character will be considered Human.

There are negatives to playing a Planeswalker.  They will not have the common knowledge of Xadune that native characters will have.  Planeswalkers may be treated differently in-play be Player Characters or Non-Player Characters.  They also will suffer environmental effects on parts of the planet that native characters will not.

Playing a Planeswalker character also counts as taking a culture packet, so keep that in mind if you have other character concepts.

How Do I Submit my Character Concept?

To submit a character concept, head over to the Character Creation Page. After reading through the page, you can submit via the form at the bottom.

What costuming is appropriate for Xadune?

Xadune is a Victorian Gaslamp Fantasy game. This means most garb which fits within in the range of Victorian to Steampunk fit well at Xadune.

Certain in-play areas have different costuming needs, which are delineated in the Player’s Handbook. However, a great rule of thumb is Victorian works across the globe.

What if I don’t like my character?

It happens – you spend hours piecing together the perfect character, but after 36 hours of playing them, you realize your mistake.

Worry not! Every new character gets three played events to change anything. Thought playing an Earth Elemani would be cool, but the makeup has you down? Change it. Not sold on Craft Skill: Underwater Basketweaving? Removed. Thought you were a Saclips, but are feeling more Reynard? The stars shift for you! Within these three events, you can change anything you started with. However, if you began learning a Skill during these events, you will not be able to undo it.

If you are still worried about not liking you character, it is an excellent idea to monster for an event or two before creating your player character. Not only does this help you understand the game world more, but you will earn Experience Points towards your character.

What Races Can My Character Be?

Any Race in the Player’s Handbook is open for new characters, except for the Capped Races. You can find the list of Capped Races here.

Playing the Game

Can I Run a Mod?

Generally speaking, no, unless you have passed a certification!

CRC: Content Runners Certification.
The CRC is a test which must be retaken every year by someone that wants to run content at Xadune. Depending on your experience with game and length of time you have run things for Xadune effects the tier of CRC you can have. There are currently three tiers. The requirements to test for a CRC is as follows:

 – Must have played the game for at least 9 events.
 – Must have attended the past 5 event for at least a half event prior to testing.
 – Must be in good standing – no formal warnings or bans on their record for the past year.
 – Must pass the CRC Test with 80% or higher.

The CRC test is a fifty-question test comprised of short answer, true/false, multiple choice, and essay style questions as well as two test modules. Can be attempted twice every 5 events or half year. The test must be taken in-person with a Staff or Story Team member present the entire time. Certification lasts (1) year from time approved, after which one can update their cert by taking a shorter refresher test with-in three months of their CRC expiring.

Part of the test is running two test modules with supervision. These will be mods the CRC applicant will develop with the aid of a Staff or Story-team member. The first mod is heavily supervised and assistance will be given with stating, loot, and general ideas. The second mod is less supervised and be more of a demonstration of the CRC applicant’s talents. Feedback is given after each mod.

Certification can be revoked for the following reasons:

○ Receiving a Formal Warning
○ Failing to adhere to or enforce the Xadune rules
○ Running unapproved content at Xadune

So that’s a lot of work for this, what does it get you? A CRC allows a person to submit mods to run during the event. Upon approval, mod will be scheduled and ran. Depending on the tier level depends on what you can run. Tiers are earned by years of experience running mods at Xadune.

Tiers
– 1st year certification: Can run one mod an event, during the day time only. These are not allowed to be Town Battles or mods that are designed for more than 8 players.
– 2nd year certification: Can run up to two mods an event. Can run nighttime mods. These are not allowed to be Town Battles, or mods that are designed for more than 15 players.
– 3rd year certification: Can run Town Battles. Large, inclusive battles or events which are designed to engage at least 75% of town. Story ideas can also be far reaching and last an entire event or multiple if required.

All mods for all levels of certification must be submitted in full to Xadune Staff and can only be run with approval of Xadune Staff.

Gaining certification levels requires running content at two events per every three events over the course of a year. Should a mod be missed, the CRC holder may be allowed to make up the missed event’s content by doubling up at an event. More details on that as the need arises.

Finally, previous (and future) Plot experience will count towards certification level time. So, if you have served on Plot in the past, you can take you CRC and start off at Tier 2. For future reference, the CRC test will be required for those of you that want to be on plot in the future.

And for those of you curious about what is on the test: anything and everything Xadune. Test questions will be pulled form a pool we have been making over the past few years, so no test should be alike. Questions range from being straight forward rules questions, to important historical questions about the game. Knowing the PHB is the first step in preparing for the CRC. Learning the history of the in-play game would be the next. Lastly, we will say their will be marked situational questions. These questions have no right or wrong answer in a sense that we are looking for a sense on how you will handle yourself in the situations. We need content runners that will not just entertain the players of Xadune, but also help us make sure everyone is playing fairly and within our set rules. We need people that can enforce this when needed, not just turn a blind eye.

Do I Have to Know All the Rules?

It is a good idea to be familiar with the rules.  A comprehensive guide to the rules is in the Player’s Handbook.  However, we understand it is a lot to remember.  If you ever have a rules question during game, simply place a closed fist or boffer on your head and ask the Marshal.

How do I advance my character?

Outside of roleplay and leveling up by XP gain, you can grow the Skills list on your character card!

To begin learning a new Skill or Ability, first one must find a teacher. Some Skills can be self-taught (without a teacher), but almost always it will incur an XP penalty between 25-50% of the base XP needed for the Skill. A teacher will require a fee of Units (in-game currency), which is to be paid at the time of learning the Skill. And when you are ready to begin learning, you and the teacher must complete a Learn Card on site. Skills and Abilities cannot be started between events and a Learn Card MUST be completed.

Each character has 4 learn slots. The number of learn slots used at one time will increase the amount of time it takes to learn your Skill. You can use up to 2 slots with 0 penalty – meaning you can learn two things with no increase in learn times.

1 Slot Used = 0 Penalty
2 Slots Used = 0 Penalty
3 Slots Used = 33% Learn Time Increase across all skills
4 Slots Used = 66% Learn Time Increase across all skills

You are allowed to self-teach one skill at a time with no learn time penalty.  A self-taught skill will require the self-teach XP cost.
Self-Teaching a second thing = takes up two learn slots
Self-Teaching a third skill takes three slots, etc..

How Do I Check In?

Check In begins around 7:30pm in the Tavern.  You will meet with the person doing check in, pay for the event if you have not already, and receive your character card. Check In ends at Opening Ceremonies.

What Happens During a First Event?

You’ll either remember every moment or it will be a complete blur.  Your first LARP event is always something special.

All players – new or veteran – report to the Tavern at 9pm for Opening Ceremonies.  Here, announcements will be made, rules clarified, and general order of business items will be covered.  After Opening Ceremonies, all New Players will report to the New Player Committee member designated.

From here, all New Players are briefed on LARP safety and will have an opportunity to practice combat. After some fun introductory material, New Players go on their first Module (Mod).  The New Player Mod will provide an opportunity to try out some skills, roleplay, and combat, and for the new player to ask any questions they may have.  Think of it as the Tutorial Level.

After this mod, you will be brought back to the rest of the group and you join the Adventurers. From there, it is up to you.   There will be other Player Characters to interact with, Non-Player Characters, mod hooks, encounters, and everything in between.  A good sense of adventure and a willingness to meet new people goes a long way!

What if I Have Questions or a Problem During the Game?

Simply place a closed fist or boffer on top of your head and ask! This indicates you are asking ‘Out of Play’ (OOP) and the Marshal will be happy to help.

What if I need to leave site during game?

Real life happens – no problem! If you need to leave site before game off, let Staff or Storyteam know that you’re headed out.

If you will be returning to site, feel free to leave your cabin set up.

What If I Show Up After Game Starts?

Don’t worry, you can still check in! Report to Staff Cabin, and they will get you squared away as quickly as possible.  It is recommended that you let Staff know you intend to arrive after Game On, so they can make the check in process go as easily as possible.

What is expected of me as a player?

To have fun! Xadune is a game, and therefor, we want you to enjoy yourself.

The main way to interact with the game is to talk to other characters, and to go on modules. If your roleplay has you avoiding talking to NPCs or going on adventures, you may wish to find a reason to break the ice.

We do expect all our players to act in accordance with the Game Policies. Failure to meet these expectations can result in expulsion from the event.

We also have expectations in terms of costuming and player level immersion. As a Victorian Gaslamp Fantasy game, the costuming is, well, Victorian. While exceptions can be made for new players, t-shirts and sweat pants aren’t very Victorian. Your costuming doesn’t have to be fancy, but it has to be something.

Similarly, it is expected that when around other players, you will be In Play. Talking as your character, about things that at least sound in-play. (A great example of sounding in-play is the extended conversations about project carriages. Ones which can have the power of three hundred horses. Produced by the company Nissan.) Going out-of-play for a moment to ask a question is no big deal, but if you need an extended out-of-play conversation or just a break from your character, it is acceptable to step away to your cabin or to a quiet area.

Lastly, all players must work a Volunteer Shift. This can either be working as a Monster or in the Tavern. Not completing a Volunteer Shift will forfeit all XP earned that event.

Character Progression

Can I Start Learning a Skill if I Don’t Have the Pre-Requisite?

As it says on page 3 of the Skills List, a character must have all the Pre-Requisites on their character card prior to beginning to learn a Skill, Ability, or Talent. This includes XP Pre-Requisites.

How do I learn a new Skill?

Firstly, there are two ways to start learning a Skill: Learn it yourself (only certain Skills, and with an XP penalty), or find a Teacher in play. When you decide on it, find a Learn Card over by the Card Box and make sure you turn it into the Card Box.

Each character has 4 Learn Slots.

2 slots with 0 penalty – meaning you can learn two things with no increase in learn times.

These penalties are only applied as the learn slots are used.

Teach Slots

When your character hits level 10, they have 2 teach slots.
Your first teaching slot comes with 0 penalties and does not affect your Learn Slots.
Using your second teaching slot adds 25% to the teach time.  It also counts towards your Learn Slots when calculating learn time increases.

1 Teach Slot Used = 0 Penalty
2 Teach Slots Used = 25% Teach Time Increase; 1 Learn Slot used.
3 Teach Slots Used = 33% Teach Time Increase; 2 Learn Slots used.
