Every player is required to complete a 3 hour Volunteer Shift. You can work as a Monster, in the Tavern, or help Clean Up after the event. Failure to complete at least 1 shift during a 3-day event or 2 shifts during a 4-day event will result in forfeiting earned XP for the event.
Monster Shift
During your monster shift, you will be working with plot and staff to play any number of non-playing characters–friend or foe. Typically these shifts are a mix of combat and roleplay. Its a good way to expose yourself to new combat styles, roleplaying new characters, and it lets you interact with the game from a different perspective than your PC.
Proper garb for a monster shift is black clothes suitable for the weather. They do not need to be setting appropriate. You may be given garb to wear as an NPC.
Tavern Shift
Everyone has to eat, and someone has to cook. You can do the Tavern Shift in character, or as a generic cook in the kitchen.
You do not need to be a master chef to do a tavern shift. Dishes must be cleaned, counters wiped, and food prepped. If you are uncomfortable with cooking, it is a great idea to team up with someone who is.
As an added incentive, completing a tavern shift will earn a $4.50 tavern tab credit towards your tab for the event the shift was completed.
Remember: If no one signs up for a tavern shift, the kitchen is closed.
Clean Up Shift
Clean Up Shift is a shift after Game Off has been called, in which you will be helping clean site. You may be asked to collect packets and darts from across site, sweep cabins, clean the kitchen, mop bathrooms, pack mod buildings, or any number of tasks. This may require you to stay past the ‘player off site’ time.
On Sign-Ups
Please also keep in mind that we might have caps on monsters we need/could use at a time. 15 people coming to monster Saturday morning while 5 people are awake: well, 10+ will be turned away. So please keep in mind that we will have limits. We will keep you posted on the tavern needs as we know many would like to help out there. Not monstering because you were turned away is not an excuse. The best way to unsure you will be able to monster when you want to is to sign up on the Monster Shift Request sheet, typically posted in the tavern. If you have your name assigned to a time slot there you will be used.
So what does monstering a whole event get you? Well for starters, our eternal gratitude, but we know most would like more than a hug and a pat on the back. You can earn bonus XP to go towards your character (dependent on a few factors), and bonuses might be applied to those that work their ass off (this could be anything from materials, to units, to more bonus XP). Not only that, but you get to be at the event for free (a small fee ensures you will get bonus XP), and we will 95% of the time find a bed or piece of floor for you to sleep on for free. But, we promise you that you will be constantly at work.
